"Script"

Kaname Ouki

Just as scripts are like a part of Kaname Ouki's personality, like a "partner," Line Art Charmant will continue to aim to be a partner that is close to everyone and makes their lives brighter.

What does a script mean to you, Ouki?

She says that she keeps "elegance" in mind not only when she is acting, but also when choosing fashion items such as glasses.

"It's something that's been said ever since my days in Takarazuka, but I've recently come to realise that what is ultimately sought after in people and things is 'elegance.' Just like glasses that are sturdy even when spread wide, yet exude a delicate and refined atmosphere, I would like to hone my humanity as I get older and cherish 'elegance.'"

- Beautifully fitting, elegant glasses

At Charmant Ginza Namiki-dori, Ouki chose a pair of glasses with a translucent design that makes her facial features look even more beautiful.

"I never knew choosing glasses could be so much fun! I was attracted to the red-framed ones, but when I saw myself wearing them in the mirror, it was this clear type that suited me best. I love the look and fit of them."

Line Art Charmant's glasses are made using "Excellence Titanium," a proprietary material developed specifically for glasses. Before they are released to the market, they undergo a variety of tests, including durability tests spanning tens of thousands of cycles and destructive tests.

"I was told to 'please try spreading them out,' so I gave it a try hesitantly, and was surprised at how flexible and springy they were. In the past, glasses I'd chosen based on appearance alone ended up being loose or slipping out of place, so I'm happy with how comfortable they are to wear."

- Clothes and glasses are becoming more feminine little by little

Takarazuka's top stars embody the ideal man for women. They are expected to look good in any situation and maintain a star image.

"After I left the team, the first thing I went to buy was a skirt. When I was still playing, I always wore pants because I never knew where or who might be watching me."

Ouki, who played Oscar in "The Rose of Versailles," caused a big stir when she appeared on stage as Marie Antoinette in "1789: Les Amants de la Bastille" shortly after leaving the company, but it is said that her private fashion and mannerisms have also gradually become more feminine.

"Fortunately, I have good eyesight, so I collect glasses and sunglasses for fashion purposes, but as an extension of my days in Takarazuka, I only have square, stylish frames. From now on, I'd like to try round frames and other frames with a gentler feel. Glasses affect the impression a person makes, so it might be interesting to choose designs that make me look like a different character depending on my mood that day, just like I can play different roles."

The scripts are Ouki Kaname's precious "partners." On the left is the suspense drama "Trap," which was performed in seven cities across the country in October and November, and on the right is the script for the NHK historical drama "To You, Shining," in which her role as Akasome Emon has been a hot topic.

The glasses worn this time are the XL1727 CR from the Minuet Collection. The clear resin and gold mesh brows overlap, creating an intelligent, elegant and mature look, just like the Akasome Emon that Ouki plays in the historical drama. The CR is a limited edition color for the 15th anniversary of Line Art Charmant.

- The fun of expanding a character and bringing the role to life

When I get a script for a new work, the first thing I do is read it and crystallize the image of the character I'm playing.

"Of course I memorize my lines, but I also think about how the character will act and what they are thinking inside when there is a line that says '...' and flesh it out. In the case of a play, I write down everything from basic things like how to move from here to what I feel as I perform each day, and I also write down instructions from the director, including the date. Interestingly, the script is all connected by the flow of the play, so I also write down points such as which parts of the other person's lines were good. In serial dramas, I sometimes act without knowing what will happen to the role I am playing as the story unfolds, but sometimes I imagine what will happen next in the script and consult with the director or producer while I act. Thankfully, I have been blessed with wonderful teachers and mentors since my days at Takarazuka, so although they didn't tell me to do things in particular, it's a habit that I naturally acquired."

To expand on a role from the script, watching other genres of stage productions and people watching can also be helpful.

"I learn a lot from watching other people's plays, but Kyogen has been particularly instructive. I had the opportunity to experience the phrasing of lines in a chanted style, and felt the importance of each and every sound in the words, which gave me a chance to deepen my love for acting. I also get inspiration from many other places, such as Korean dramas and the way office workers smoke cigarettes."

- The joy of receiving the script with my character's name on it

Kaname Ouki, who has always stood in the spotlight at the center of the stage and captivated audiences, first got a script with her character's name in it during the performance at the final cultural festival of the Takarazuka Music School.

"All of my classmates were performing in the play, and the teacher gave each of us 45 character names that were carefully tailored to match the image of the child. I still remember it clearly, my character's name was "Noble." I was so happy that I looked over the page of the script with the character names written on it over and over again."

Since then, in any stage play, TV drama, or movie, the script has been my most important guideline and partner in creating a character.

"When I'm playing a work that is based on an original work, I read the original work, and when I'm playing a real person, I research reference materials, but ultimately, what I express is the life and thoughts of the character written in the script. Next year will mark 25 years in the entertainment industry, and I've spent every day with scripts in mind, and I'm sure I'll continue to play many roles with scripts in mind."
